2019 Haro Midway REVIEW (complete BMX bike)

This is a close look and review of the 2019 Haro Midway complete BMX at Cyclepath Mississauga. Watch a Subrosa Salvador get overhauled here

Since Haro revamped their lineup a few years ago, they’ve been on top of the complete BMX game. The lineup changed a little bit for 2019 but the Midway is still, well, “Mid-way” between Haro’s entry and pro level bikes. The Midway is built to be a great all-rounder with plenty of features for the dollar. The frame is built with a chromoly front end, integrated headset, mid bb, and brake mounts with drilling for gyro tabs. Most of the parts are a carry-over from last year, with Haro’s aftermarket La Mesa tires, Team grips, and more parts from their 78 line. New for this year (other than colors) are the 78 brake system and freecoaster wheel set.

PRO

The Midway has some great components. The cranks are some of the best 8 spline cranks available and Haro’s Recycled pedals are tried and true. The freecoaster rear wheel is smooth and has very little slack, letting the bike pedal more naturally than some other bikes with freecoasters. The pivotal seat looks amazing to my eye. The La Mesa tires are super light weight and make the bike easy to control. Big bars and a top load stem put the rider and a comfortable position, and the bike weighs in @ 26.2 lbs or 11.9 kg, which is perfectly reasonable for a mid range complete.

CON

While the Midway is always great to ride, the 2019 model may not be quite as durable as I’d like. The new freecoaster hub seems to be a great component but the rims don’t seem as tough as the Sata rims on previous models and the front hub does not have sealed bearings. My other big concern is the tires. The La Mesa tires seem to be designed for light weight than long life, so an investment in tires may be just around the corner. This is common with complete bikes though, so not a big deal. The last things are that the brake cable feel spongy despite great brakes, and the grips are a bit slippery for my taste, both of which are cheap and easy to change, so these things are also not big deals.

VERDICT

The 2019 Haro Midway earns an 8/10 rating for me. It offers an easy, comfortable, light weight ride for beginners or intermediate riders. The features on this bike are amazing for the price and include a free coaster and aftermarket parts from Haro, which are generally great quality. If it had the Sata rims from last year (or double wall rims) with the freecoaster hub, and if it had some little upgrades on the small parts like the cable or grips or even front hub, this bike could earn a perfect rating from me. I’d strongly recommend this bike plus a set of pegs like Haro’s 78 pegs to anyone looking to get into BMX or take their riding up to an intermediate level. This bike will be very rewarding if well set up and well maintained.
